Handcrafts in Champéry

We just inform you that the following caraftsmen practise this activity like an hobby.

Bell foundry

Champéry is home to one of Switzerland’s last bell foundries, where bells are still made in the traditional way. Jean-Denis Perrin carries on with this ancient craft and in his workshop, you can find some twenty different bells moulds into which more than 9 generations have poured their secret mix of molten metal. On request, Mr. Perrin will create personalised bells for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and other significant events.

Shingles

Shingles are a special element in the local architecture.  These were used instead of tiles and slates which are typical in other regions.  Shaped in pine or larch wood, these little boards are nailed and arranged in several layers, sometimes also used to protect exterior house walls exposed to harsh mountain elements. Today in Champéry there exist only a few manufacturers.

Dolls

A local seamstress sews bespoke dolls in traditional costumes from the olden days when women wore trousers and red scarves during the week, characterising them as being pioneering ladies from Champéry; on Sundays and holidays they wore dresses.

Wood-carving

In the catholic church of Champéry you can admire the Stations of the Cross, sculptured by a local artist. The biblical scenes are three dimensional carvings, the characters being attached to the wood only on the back.

Tiffany lamps, Ceramics, Jewellery

Local craftsmanship of Tiffany lamps: assembling coloured Tiffany glass framed in copper and welded with lead. Fabrication of ceramic articles, molded, burnt and painted in the village, as well as Tiffany jewellery.

Poker-work

Ornaments shaped by a wood turner with a gleaming metal point.

Wool-spinning

Spinning of natural wool fiber by means of the spinning wheel (washed and strung). The wool is put into skeins then into balls.

Wood-turning

Making of different hard wood objects on lathe, like jugs, trays, fruit bowls, cups, goblets, pepper mills, etc..
